Oklahoma City Truck Accident Along I-35 Leaves One Dead

January 10, 2012

A 54-year-old truck driver was killed after being involved in an accident with another tractor-trailer and a car on I-35 in Oklahoma City last Friday. According to News Channel 4, the accident occurred in the northbound lanes of the highway, near the on ramp from NE 122nd Street.

Spokeswoman for the Oklahoma highway patrol, Trooper Betsy Randolph, said that a tractor-trailer was attempting to come onto the highway when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The driver who was hit and killed was in the northbound lanes of the highway and tried to avoid colliding with the out-of-control truck, but couldn’t. Debris from the collision flew back on the highway, causing another car to wreck as well.

Accidents involving commercial tractor-trailers can be very complicated due to the numerous laws that regulate the trucking industry. Drivers have strict limits on every aspect of how they do their job, and failure to maintain standards could be grounds for a case of fault if involved in an accident similar to the one described above.

That is why the Oklahoma truck accident attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers encourage anyone who has been involved in an accident with a tractor-trailer to contact a lawyer immediately. They will be able to help you better understand your rights and what information should be examined to ensure the truck driver was in full compliance with the law.

Oklahoma City Apartment Fire Caused By Cigarette Butt

January 3, 2012

An Oklahoma City woman was seriously injured in a New Years Eve apartment fire. According to News Channel 4, the fire started at around 10:00 PM Saturday night at Willow Cliff Apartments located at the corner of N.W. 50th St. and Meridian Ave.

Firefighters said that they could see smoke billowing out of a second story unit of the building when they arrived at the scene. They quickly made entry to the burning apartment, where they found a female victim who had been severely burned in the blaze.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Arson investigators who were called to the scene of the fire determined that the blaze was started by “discarded smoking materials” on a couch.

The Federal government says that the number one cause of fatal house fires in our country today is cigarettes. Data shows that fires caused by burning cigarette butts claim an average of 900 lives per year and normally begin on soft furnishings. Experts also point out that it is not always the smokers who are injured in these blazes. Children, parents, spouses, and neighbors are often the ones who are hurt by these fires that are sparked because of negligence.

If you have been hurt in a fire that was started at no fault of your own, the Oklahoma burn injury attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers can help. Contact an experienced attorney today for a free initial consultation.

OSU Women’s BasketBall Coach And Assistant Killed In Plane Crash

November 22, 2011

Last Thursday evening, the head women’s basketball coach for Oklahoma Statue University, Kurt Budke, and his assistant, Miranda Serna, were killed when their small, single-engine went down in an Arkansas Wildlife Management area. According to News Channel 4, the coaches died with the pilot of the PA-28 Cherokee aircraft, former State Senator Olin Branstetter, and his wife, Paula.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are still working to determine why the plane went down, but have determined the crash happened at 4:10 PM as the coaches were returning from a recruiting trip.

The crash happened 10 months after the 10th Anniversary of a plane crash that killed 10 members of the men’s basketball team as they returned home from a game. Since that crash, the school has required that all air crafts ridden by players undergo a vigorous inspection to ensure the plane is functioning correctly.

Multivitamins Linked To Higher Health Risks In Older Women

October 11, 2011

Thousands of Americans take dietary supplements every day for numerous reasons. Some take them to build more muscle, while others take them for overall health. New research shows, though, that taking these supplements could put users at risk for cardiovascular disease or cancer.

KOCO News reports that a new study published in the Archive of Internal Medicine found that women taking supplements over a long period of time were more at risk for the diseases than those that did not. The women examined in the study were all over the age of fifty, and the strongest links to higher mortality rates were in those taking Iron supplements. Contrary to many other studies in the field, researchers found a decreased risk in mortality for those taking calcium supplements.

Dr. Donald Hensrud of the Mayo Clinic remarked, “Up until now there has been much benefit or risk seen with multivitamins…this [study] raises the question that it might hurt.”

Upon release of the findings, the makers of several multivitamins and dietary supplements fired back saying that the research was biased and it did not prove their products raise a person’s chances of becoming ill.

The Oklahoma Defective Product Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers would like your opinion. Could vitamin supplements actually do more harm than good, or do you think the numbers were manipulated? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page.

Tulsa Citizens Urged To Get Flu Vaccinations

September 27, 2011

With the brisk air of fall beginning to blow into the area, the Tulsa Health Department (THD), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are urging citizens to begin getting their flu shots.

KTUL News reports that this year’s round of vaccinations include the H1N1 virus along with several other strains of influenza which experts said would be prevalent this year. Most individuals will only require one shot; however, children under the age of 9 who have never been vaccinated will require a follow-up booster four weeks later.

Vaccinations are available at the following Tulsa Health Department locations Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.:

The vaccinations will cost $25 for those with private health insurance or those who can afford the shot, though it is free to those on Medicare or who meet certain income requirements.

Early last year, CDC experts  began recommending that everyone six months or older should begin being vaccinated yearly for the disease, especially children and the elderly, who are particularly prone to the virus.

The Oklahoma Medical Malpractice Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers urge citizens to take advantage of these vaccinations before the beginning of flu season. It’s a decision that will protect you from the yearly winter plague and, at best, may save your life.

Multi-State Listeria Outbreak Linked To Colorado Melons

September 13, 2011

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), are announcing that citizens should refrain from eating cantaloupe grown out of the Rocky Ford, Colorado, area. The agencies say the fruit has been linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria.

According to 9 News, the melons have been associated with at least 15 cases of infected individuals in Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. Although only one case of the bacterial infection has been confirmed in Oklahoma, another six cases are currently under investigation.

Consumers who believe they have come into contact with the tainted fruit can check the label or with the store where it was purchased to determine if it is part of the warnings. If it is, the CDC and OSDH say to throw the fruit away in a sealed bag to ensure pets and other animals will not be exposed.

Listeria bacterium are commonly found in soil, water, and on food, but are easily destroyed when cooked. The bacteria, if left untreated in human cases, can develop into meningitis and become very deadly. Signs of the infection include flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

If you have been harmed by food that is believed to be tainted, the Oklahoma Personal Injury Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers may be able to help you. They may be able to help better explain the rights you may have against those who are responsible for supplying the tainted foods.

Disappearance Of Two Men At Lake Prompts Safety Concerns

September 6, 2011

The disappearance of two Oklahoma men from Lake Tenkiller in Park Hill, Oklahoma, has prompted citizens to look closer at how to stay safe while on the water throughout the rest of the summer. According to KOCO.com News, an Oklahoma State Highway Patrol spokesperson said the men went missing from a boat at Party Cove.

Authorities said people who were members of the party thought they had gotten onto another boat and became concerned for their safety after several hours without seeing them. A search of the area turned up a float one of the men had been using, but no one was in sight. A dive team has searched for two days with no sign of the men anywhere.

The mysterious disappearance has caused others to become concerned for their own safety while on the water. Officials say the best thing a person can do is to abstain from alcohol while on the water, especially if swimming. Using the buddy system is also advised if swimming in a populated area, such as a cove or pool. Following these two rules will help ensure you are aware of your surroundings and that of others in your party.
