McAlester

McAlester is named after J.J. McAlester, a merchant who later became Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma, and who also played a key role in the Charles Portis novel, True Grit.

Today, McAlester has an estimated population of 18,000 people. Many of these individuals work in the Department of Corrections, as the city is home to both the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and Jackie Brannon Correctional Center.
