MoisturePlus™ Contact Lens Solution Recalled from the Market

The contact lens solution Complete® MoisturePlus™ Multi Purpose Solution has been recalled from the market. The solution, used for both cleaning soft contact lenses and storing them, may be responsible for a severe form of eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis that can result in blindness (1).

Acanthamoeba keratitis, caused by a microscopic organism, can occur in patients of any age, sex, or race, but mostly manifests in young, healthy adults (2).

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis include the sensation of having something in the eye, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, swelling of the eyelid, and extreme pain. The infection is very hard to treat, and doctors believe that about half of the people affected will need corneal transplants.

The link between these severe eye infections and Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution was discovered during an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (1).

Update: After an ongoing investigation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis was at least seven times greater for people using Complete MoisturePlus solution versus those who did not (1).

What should I do if I used Complete MoisturePlus?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that consumers should stop using the solution, discard all partially-used or unopened bottles, and replace their lenses and storage containers.
