Health Dangers & Side Effects
Several popular dietary supplements, including Jack3d and OxyElite Pro, are being investigated by the United States Army after two soldiers who used the products had heart attacks and died while exercising.
The supplements, which are available to the public online and in health stores, contain an ingredient called DMAA (dimethylamylamine), which is advertised to boost energy, metabolism, and concentration.
DMAA Side Effects
DMAA is a stimulant with effects similar to amphetamine. Its use has been associated with many serious side effects, including:
- cardiac arrest,
- fainting,
- heart attack,
- heart palpitations,
- heat stroke,
- kidney failure,
- liver failure,
- seizure,
- and even death.
In response to the soldiers’ deaths and reports of others who’ve suffered from these side effects, the United States Defense Department has removed all products containing DMAA from military bases pending the results of its investigation. Its use also has been banned by several sports organizations, including the Olympics.
